Those who have poor eyesight and who simply hate wearing glasses and contacts have often thought about getting laser eye surgery to give them the eyesight that they want without any aids. There is curiosity about how laser eye surgery works and who is going to be a candidate to get this type of surgery. The first thing that should be determined is if a person is going to be able to get laser eye surgery.

Good candidates for laser eye surgery are those who are:
• Nearsighted
• Farsighted
• Have Astigmatism
• Have Thick Corneas

Those who cannot have laser eye surgery:
• Dry Eye Syndrome
• Cataracts
• Diabetes

When they fall into the first category, those people are then going to want to know exactly how laser eye surgery works. This is going to explain how LASIK laser eye surgery is done as it is the most common and least expensive type and the details above are for this type of surgery as well.
• Step One – After being made comfortable in the operating room, the patient is going to have drops placed in the eye that is going to numb them so they do not feel anything. They are not going to be anesthetized and are going to be awake for the entire procedure. After the eyes are numb, there is going to be an instrument that is placed in the eye to keep the eyelids out of the way so that the surgeon can access them easier. Any foreign matter is going to be removed. Then the cornea is going to be gently lifted with a surgical knife.
• Step Two – This step is where the patient being awake is going to be necessary. The surgeon is going to ask the patient to focus on a particular point in the room so that they can have the eye in a certain position to move on to the next step. It is vital for the patient to follow the surgeons orders at this time so that there are not going to be any mistakes made.
• Step Three – This is when the laser is used to make the cornea the shape that is needed to correct the vision problems the patient has. After this has been completed, the eye is going to be closed and the patient is going to be able to go home.

It is important to follow any after care advice that has been given to the patient. While the surgery is only going to take a few minutes from step one to step three, the results are going to last a life time if the days and weeks following the surgery are lived with the post operative warnings being adhered to.
