There are a few side effects that are possible from laser eye surgery. These side effects can sometimes be temporary or sometimes they are permanent. It really depends on each individual and their ability to heal and their eyes ability to handle the surgery. Some side effects can be corrected and others cannot. The following are the most common side effects and the chances of their permanency:
• Seeing a halo – This is a common side effect to having laser eye surgery. What it means is that everything is seen with a shadow or halo around it. This is only going to last a few weeks in most cases. It can only be a minor irritation or some are going to have to curb their driving and other activities until it goes away. If it lasts longer than two weeks, then the surgeon who did the procedure should be contacted to make sure there are no other problems that may be causing the halo effect.
• Eye infections – Some people can experience eye infections if they do not take care of the surgery area properly. Even though it is rare, those who get it notice that the healing process can take longer. In some cases, antibiotics may be necessary to combat the infection and to help speed up the healing.
• The wrong correction – Very rarely the physician can input the wrong prescription. This does not happen very often, but when it does it can be devastating. Most doctors who perform these procedures have measures that are taken to avoid this from happening. Some may just need to wear prescription glasses to correct this and others can have another surgery to correct the incorrect procedure.
• Dry eyes – This is not only a side effect, it is also a risk that is taken. For some though, the dry eye does not last forever and it only takes a few weeks for the eyes to begin to get their natural moisture back again. While the eye is not able to produce its own moisture, there are going to be eye drops that can replace that moisture until the eye does it on its own again.
These are the most common side effects that can happen during laser eye surgery. While most of these cases are extremely rare, they should be known so that there are no surprises if they become a reality. Having a trusted surgeon is going to mean less chance of these side effects occurring. Another way to keep the side effects to a minimum is by following the doctor’s orders for post operative care. Make sure that any after surgery appointments with the doctor are kept as well.
