Who Can Get Laser Eye Surgery?

If you have always wondered whether or not you would be a good candidate for laser eye surgery then there are a few questions that should be answered to help you decide if you are eligible. In many cases, these are going to be the same questions that are asked by your eye doctor who is going to perform the procedure. It is important to have a complete eye exam to know if these issues are going to keep you from having eye surgery. Many may already know the answers as they have been going to their doctor and know their own condition.
The most commonly asked questions are as follows:
• Do you have dry eye syndrome? If there is a history of dry eye syndrome then laser eye surgery is not going to be possible. This is because one of the risks is dry eye syndrome so the surgery can create even more complications if it is performed when this is already and issue. There is no need to take more risks when the health of your eyes is at stake.
• Do you have cataracts? Those with cataracts are not going to benefit from this type of surgery so getting it is pointless. Anyone who has cataracts should definitely speak to their eye doctor about other options that may be available to them aside from laser surgery. There are some procedures that can help those with cataracts to have better eyesight, but laser surgery is not one of them.
• Are you a diabetic? If you have diabetes, then this surgery is not going to be an option for you. There are complications that are above and beyond those for a healthy person. Diabetes can sometimes attack the eyes and the healing process can be hampered. This means that the risks are just not worth the surgery so it is not done.
These are just a few of the questions that are going to be asked before laser eye surgery can be considered. Those that have these issues should speak to their doctor to see if they are a candidate for laser eye surgery. While laser eye surgery may not be an option, there may be others that are going to offer better eye sight for the patient. If none of these issues applies to you, then you are probably a good candidate for laser eye surgery.
