Those who are thinking of getting laser eye surgery can be concerned about the risks that are involved. While for most, laser eye surgery is completely safe, laser eye surgery does have some side effects that should be mentioned. These side effects can be devastating. For this reason, it is very important that only a trusted surgeon with a proven track record be consulted. Those who are offering buy one get one free laser eye surgeries may not be the best surgeons to go to. The following are the three most common risks of laser eye surgery:
• Loss of Moisture in the Eye – Some people have a permanent loss to the ability to keep their eyes moist. This can just be an annoying but not life changing. One just needs to keep some eye wash handy to make sure the eyes keep from drying out. If they dry out, it can be very irritating and even painful for some.
• Light Sensitivity – There are those who may become sensitive to bright lights. The only way these people can function is if they have very dark sunglasses. Getting rid of glasses is one of the purposes for getting this surgery so it can be quite disheartening to realize that sunglasses are now going to be needed for the rest of their lives.
• Permanent Blindness – This is exactly what it means. There are a very tiny percentage of people who can actually lose their sight totally when they have this procedure. It typically happens when the surgeon who is doing to the procedure does not take the time that is necessary or is unfamiliar with the equipment.
It should be noted that the above risks, however real they are, are rare. Those surgeons who do not know the procedures fully are typically found out very quickly and their practice is shut down. Consumer protection agencies are going to have a list of these physicians that should be avoided at all costs. Only go to a trusted physician who has a good track record for performing this type of operation.
When going to find a surgeon to do the work, check their credentials out. Do not go to the first one you find in the phone book. Really research them and find out if they have had any malpractice suits levied against them. Check other states to see if there were any issues there. They may have just moved to the area as each state has their own sets of laws. Doing this legwork means that a safe procedure is going to take place without any fear of the potential risks to the patient.
